'Race for Life!'
At the time early 1980's, our name was Disciples Ministry Church Mission, later it was changed to Pastor Paul's Mission. We had very few fundraising events. However in 1985 the 'Race for Life' was different. It was sponsored by Disciples Ministry Church Mission for the benefit of 'Oak Park Neighborhood Center'. Today Oak Park Neighborhood Center north is one of four locations of Pillsbury United Communities organization. Back in the 1980's our neighbor just a few blocks down the street at 1701 Oak Park got our attention and we wanted to help them in some way. Pictured above is Thomas, their Administrative Director, shaking hands with Pastor Paul. On the table is the $1,100 donation raised by Disciples Ministry Church Mission at the 'Race for Life' event. The money was used to 'Send a Kid to Camp Manakiki'. Many of Pastor Paul's Mission families were able to send their children to camp too. It was fun to help!
Pictured below are the racers who ran down Plymouth Avenue participating in the race. They had sponsors who donated towards their efforts. Closing off Plymouth Avenue at that time was a big deal and made the event even better. 'Dove' our very own church music group played and our Minneapolis Council Member Van White attended. He signaled the beginning of the race, using a whistle because a gun would not have been the best choice at the time. We had free food, of course, and it was so much fun. I am puzzled and wondered why we never did it again for Pastor Paul's Mission. It must have been that we were so busy distributing free food that time just slipped away.
Your donations support what we are calling our 'Online Race for Life'. We plan to have a lot of fun too!
