The Home Ownership Gap is the difference between home ownership by non-white households and home ownership by white households. The many causes include low income, limited access to credit, lack of understanding about the purchasing process, no home ownership in the family historically and racism. Although Minnesota has one of the highest rates of home ownership in the nation, it does not reflect that with home ownership among non-white households.
According to the data above, both Census Data Tables show very high non-white populations. We can presume that the home ownership in these neighborhoods reflect the same disproportionate gaps.
It is more likely that renters are burdened with higher housing costs. 'Cost Burdened Households' are regarded as households spending 30% or more for housing costs alone causing added burdens to the economic strain to the households.
Neighborhoods with 'Cost Burdened Households' are less economically stable. Property values are reduced because of low home ownership due to transient populations who rent. The neighborhoods become less desirable for new home ownership increasing the 'Home Ownership Gap' where non-white populations and poverty are prevalent. According to Minnesota Compass 26% or 600,000 Minnesota households spend 30% and more on housing costs. Affordable housing is an important issue in Minnesota especially in 'Cost Burdened Households'.
